How Easy It Really is to Test Your Car's Battery

Testing the battery takes a simple tool and some step-by-step information. A voltmeter and this guide, and you'll know if your car battery can handle another season.
  • To start, turn off the vehicle and make sure the car headlights are not on.
  • Open the car hood, carefully inspect the battery terminals. If there is any corrosion, use a battery brush or wire brush to clean the areas.
  • Attach the positive cable from the voltmeter, the red cable, to the positive battery terminal. Take the black cable, the negative, and attach that to the negative battery terminal.
  • Looking at the meter on the odometer, if the needle is above 12.4 on the scale, the battery is in excellent working condition. You should be concerned when the needle is at or below the 12.2 reading.
