Introducing the Ram 1500 EV - an electric vehicle also known as Ram 1500 PHEV, similar to gas and diesel variants available from Jeff D'Ambrosio Auto Group in Downingtown, PA.
The electric truck is still in concept phases, but Ram is going to try its best to get it out before 2015. As part of a $48 million partnership with the Department of Energy, Ram is loaning 10 PHEV trucks to DTE Energy, for real-world testing in Detroit.
"Cities have been carefully selected to help the Chrysler Group LLC collect a wide range of data," explained Abdullah Bazzi, senior manager of Chrysler's advanced hybrid vehicle project. "Working with a local energy partner like DTE that is in our backyard offers a great combination of suburban and rural driving, as well as ever-changing Michigan weather, is ideal as a test cycle for these vehicles."1
The PHEV 1500 drivetrain includes a liquid-cooled 12.9kWhr lithium ion battery pack, along with 6.6 kilowatt on-board charger.
As of now, it only gives the truck an all-electric driving range of 20 miles. After battery power is drained, Ram reverts to a two-mode hybrid. This may improve as more test results come in, and technology advances.
